Angel Wrath Chapter 14

Home.

I dropped our bags on the floor and fell back on our bed. Valerie was downstairs sorting through the mail before we focused on the wedding gifts piled on the kitchen table.

“Chris?” she called up the stairs.

“I’m coming,” I mumbled. I shouldn’t be as tired as I was, especially since I had slept for a solid four or five hours on the plane. Jetlag decided to whip my ass, but I forced myself up and trudged down the stairs, putting a halfway interested expression on my face. The couch hugged me as I took a seat, tempting me to close my eyes, but I knew I’d get a swat from Valerie.

She had moved the pile from the kitchen onto the coffee table. With enthusiasm that reminded me of a kid at Christmas, she handed me the basket of cards and started ripping wrapping paper.

I shuffled through the envelopes. All but one was addressed to either Mr. and Mrs. Ryan or C.J. and Valerie. The single envelope had my full name scrawled across the front and I stared at it as a sudden chill hit, making my stomach roll. Valerie gasped and my gaze bounced to her.

She pulled a beautiful embroidered throw blanket out of a box and held it up. Our names and the date were imprinted and I gave her a smile before focusing back on the letter in my hand.

Valerie continued with the next box and I slid my finger under the tab, ripping the top of the envelope.

I pulled the card from the sheath and stared at the front. My smile faded. The perfectly appropriate wedding card was splattered with something rusty. I glanced up as Valerie displayed a silver frame, her smile still as bright as before. I pressed my lips together in a tight smile and glanced back at the ruined card. Dread I couldn’t quantify licked my soul and I bit my lower lip, opening the card. I swallowed hard at the picture enclosed. The words were even worse.

Paper had stopped being crumpled and I tore my gaze away from the promises listed in the card, and met Valerie’s gaze. She was staring at me and the paper slipped from my fingers. I sprang to my feet, bolting to the phone.

My heart thundered in my chest as I dialed.

“Connor residence,” the familiar voice muttered.

“Dan?” I asked, unsure if it was actually Dan or someone else who answered.

Silence met my question and I glanced at the clock. It was way too late to be calling under normal circumstances, but this was far from normal.

“C.J.?”

“Yes.”

“You heard?”

Heard. I wish it had been a verbal announcement and not a picture with her blood splattered all over it.

“What happened?” I asked, and turned in time to see the horror form in Valerie’s features as she stared between the picture and the words scribed in the card.

“They say she slit her own throat,” Dan said, his voice just a ghost of what it used to be. The last of his children was dead and buried and I couldn’t blame him for the defeat in his tone.
